When I was a young idealistic college student, I was swept away by the words of a poem that started:

"Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."

This internalized wish came true when my husband and I moved our family to a little one-story ranch at the crest of a hill in an Illinois suburb. There was a traffic light and our house and not much else on the corner that the year before had been a farmer's field.

I searched for a long time to find the right thing to hang by my front door to inspire and be a blessing to my busy little family as we came and went.

I was at my local Bible Book store shopping for just such an item--but not knowing what it would be. When the clerk asked to help I told her that I wanted a picture of Jesus, but the ones I had seen had not seemed friendly and inviting. She got a catalog and we found Jesus Laughing, which I ordered and hung, at eye level, right by my front door.

Little did I know how useful this picture would become to me. This was just before the cell phone explosion. Many people would coax their cars to the top of the hill where they would literally die on my doorstep.

Society was warning--don't trust anyone, be alert, be suspicious-be aware. I used my Laughing Jesus to give me courage to open my door to those in need. We have loaned tire jacks and cans of gas and made sandwiches and diapered babies and taken lemonade to stranded motorists on steamy days. We kept the numbers of local garages handy for motorists who needed to call for a tow and to call a family member.

My Laughing Jesus helped me to laugh at the fear that walked me to the door each time a stranger rang the bell. Each time I glanced at his laughing face the fear would roll away, and I was able to greet the stranded stranger with a helping hand.

I'll be ordering more copies of your print, as I intend to plug the humanity of Jesus, that your picture gives, into as many places and people's lives as I possibly can, starting with my own. I thank God for the day I discovered your website.
